How many of you have ever looked at the end of the socket your using to see if it's a 6 or 12 point? How many of you really don't care how many points it has as long as it does the job needed? I'm betting the answer to both is not many! I used to be in the same boat. Open my toolbox, find the right size socket or wrench and on my way. Not anymore! After you learn the difference between 6 point and 12 point sockets and wrenches, you may find yourself taking the extra step or sorting your tools out depending on how many "points" they have as I have done.

So, what is the difference?

Well, the difference between a 6 Point and 12 Point socket or wrench is number of sides the tool has to grip the fastener. As you can see in the image above, a 6 Point tool provides a greater contact area with the fastener than the 12 Point tool. This greater contact area results in less slippage, less rounding and a greater chance of turning the fastener in the desired direction along with more skin saved on your knuckles. In addition, if you compare the amount of materials around the opening of each tool, you'll notice the 6 point has thicker materials resulting in increased tool strength.

When do you need a 12 Point tool?

A fastener that is in the shape of a hexagon such as a bolt or nut, will accept both 6 and 12 Point tools to turn. However, a 12 Point fastener, shown to the right, will only accept a 12 Point tool. Another benefit of a 12 point wrench is it gives you twice the number of starting positions which is handy when working in tight quarters. A 6 point tool has a 60 degree rotation between positions where you only have to move 30 degrees on a 12 point tool.

Overall, having both 6 and 12 point tools in your box will give you flexibility when choosing the right one for the job. When possible and working space allows, make a conscious effort to use the 6 point and you will see less rounded fasteners and busted knuckles!
